Synology ActiveProtect DP7400 Backup Appliance 2U 12-Bay, 10x 20 TB HDD + 2x 3,84 TB SSD, 64 GB RAM

SYNOLOGY DP7400 (10-bay) is a network expansion chassis designed to provide additional drive capacity for Synology storage environments. The unit accommodates up to ten drive modules, enabling centralized on-site storage expansion for file servers, backup repositories, and virtual machine data. Its form factor is optimized for integration with compatible Synology systems to increase raw capacity and simplify drive-level management without altering primary storage controllers.

Advantages

The DP7400 offers straightforward capacity scaling through ten hot-swappable drive bays, enabling quick replacement or upgrade of drives without downtime. Its design supports high-density storage expansion while maintaining compatibility with Synology management tools for unified monitoring and maintenance. The chassis reduces the need for multiple separate enclosures, consolidating storage growth in a single appliance and simplifying cabling and rack organization.

Suitable for

• Adding on-site capacity for small and medium business file servers
• Expanding storage for scheduled backups and archival data
• Increasing local disk pool size for virtualization hosts and hyperconverged setups
• Consolidating multiple drive arrays into a single manageable enclosure

Key specifications

• Drive bay count: 10 hot-swappable bays for 3.5" or 2.5" drives (compatible drive types depend on host system)
• Form factor: Rack-mount or chassis-style expansion unit for integration with Synology systems
• Connectivity: Designed to attach to compatible Synology storage controllers for data and management path (host-dependent)
• Drive management: Supports hot-swap replacement and centralized monitoring via Synology management interfaces
• Use case focus: Mass storage expansion, backup target growth, and increased local capacity for virtualization

How to use

Install compatible drives into the DP7400 drive trays and connect the chassis to a supported Synology host according to the host’s expansion instructions. Power on the expansion unit and the host system, then use the Synology management interface to recognize and incorporate the new drive bays into existing storage pools or volumes. Follow the operating system and storage software prompts to perform RAID configuration, volume creation, or to migrate data as required.

Recommendations

Place the DP7400 in a rack or location with adequate airflow and stable power. Use compatible drive models recommended by Synology and follow the host system’s guidelines for drive population and RAID setup. Schedule regular backups and monitor drive health through Synology management tools to maintain data availability and performance.
